Cavitation

The formation and rapid collapse of vapor cavities (bubbles) in a fluid where local pressure drops below the fluid's vapor pressure. In pumps, cavitation erodes impeller surfaces, reduces head + efficiency, and produces a characteristic 'gravel-in-the-pipe' noise.
